The Glen of Downs was once part of the Bellevue Estate. In Victorian times the view from the rectangular room of the nearby Bellevue House was described as ‘ a scene of luxurious softness, combined with grandeur and significance’. The pleasant little Three Trout Stream is all that remains of the great river that thousands of years ago gouged out Glen of the Downs.
The Reserve is the finest example of oak wood of it’s type close to Dublin. It is largely Sessile Oak with an understorey of Holly and a dense carpet of Woodrush, Bilberry and Heather. The woods abound in birdlife and 21 breeding species have been recorded here.
